Higher Education’s Survival
Sometimes you find someone saying what you have been thinking about. I think the future of higher education is in danger, and I would hate to see the loss of something so precious. Through Stephen Downes wonderful newsletter, OLDaily, which can be linked to here – http://www.downes.ca/, I found David Wiley’s 2008 ELearn presentation – http://opencontent.org/blog/archives/660 – which I’m embedding below. Serious food for thought

A very interesting concept, allowing a variety of media formats to be used in one show. Unfortunately when I browsed through the site I found many shows only used one media format (all text or all video, or just one audio file) instead of a variety. The text was large and centred, which made it look amateurish. It’s an important concept, but it needs refining.

The Tower and The Cloud | EDUCAUSE
Self interest alone should be driving educational institutions to move more strongly and quickly into web2.0 – “What appears to be emerging is industrial-scale computing — a standardized infrastructure for delivering computing power, network bandwidth, data storage and protection, and services. Comsumerization and industrialization beg the question “Is this the end of the middle?”; that is, what will be the role of “enterprise” IT in the future? Indeed, the bigger question is what will become of all of our intermediating institutions? This volume examines the impact of IT on higher education and on the IT organization in higher education.” via Stephen Downes
