Driving West

The afternoon autumn sun angles
into my car.
Roadside tree trunks
strobe into my vision, and
I hold my eyes open wider.

Driving west
away from my past
I grip the steering wheel,
signalling my turn
into underground parking.

I am who I need to be
during this time
before dusk, before nightfall,
before the mystery of
the darkest night.
